A dehumidifier makes a damp basement more comfortable by reducing moisture that mold needs. An air purifier with HEPA might make the same basement feel cleaner while doing almost nothing about the water problem. Conversely, a dehumidifier will not pull a meaningful amount of dust out of the air.
In 2022, someone told me they wanted an air purifier for a closet that smelled musty. I was helping with an unrelated mini-split order. The real issue was a plumbing leak. No purifier was going to fix that. A moisture measurement told the story faster than the argument. In HVAC, start with the problem, not with the product category.
6. Why is the room cold but still humid?
