4. The Air Filter Direction Check I Never Skip
The most common install mistake I catch is not a thermostat symbol. It's the filter. When a homeowner asks 'which way does air filter go?', the answer is: the arrow on the filter points toward the blower. The return side is where dirty air comes from; the supply side is where conditioned air goes out. Get it backwards, and the filter collapses, airflow drops, and the coil can freeze.

Before you choose, build a simple total-cost file: hardware, labor, accessories, service calls, energy use, and one year of support. In my experience, the lowest list price has cost us more in about 60% of cases—not because the equipment was bad, but because the budget left out the last step.
